"Super Bowl Sunday... Super Bowel Everyday!"

The Big Game is coming up this Sunday afternoon, but my newest Grandson Brayden Alexander Johnson has proven he’s a champ when it comes to the passing game (gas that is!) He pooping, smiling, eating and sleeping up a storm!

Speaking of the Super Bowl, in a recent survey, 15% of respondents said they’d miss the birth of their own child so they could watch the game. Hey… there ‘s an easy solution! Just tape the birth of your child and watch it later!!!

Last night at the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, beating out George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, the Best Actor award went to French comic Jean Dujardin for his role in the black and white movie, “The Artist”. It was the greatest moment in French history since World War II, when the Americans, oh…excuse me, the French, liberated France.

And this is the day in 1969, when the Beatles performed together for the last time on the roof of “Apple Records” for the filming of the movie “Let It Be”.  They were shut down by the cops because of noise complaints by a neighbor.  And yet 43 years later, Steven Tyler was actually ASKED to sing the National Anthem on live TV before the New England/Baltimore playoff game!

For these stories and more I’ll see you over at DickPurtan.com!

Have a great day…

I Visit Hospital... End Up With New Johnson!!!

This weekend my formidably sized family got even bigger as my daughter Julie (#6) and her husband Brad welcomed their new baby boy to the world! Weighing in at a respectable 7lbs. 5 oz. (and 21 inches long) Brayden Alexander Johnson made his debut - via C-Section - at 1:56 Saturday afternoon! 10 fingers! 10 toes! And dozens of family members on hand for the big event.  Julie had planned to have a natural birth… but when push didn’t come to shove, the Doctors decided a C-Section was the safest way to go and less than an hour later - Gail and I were the proud grandparents of our 8th grandchild! So, after having 6 girls of our own and a total of zero boys, the tally of our kid’s kids now stands at 2 girls (Julia & Lauren) and 6 - Yes, 6 - boys! (Matthew, Preston, Charlie, Adam, Jack and Brayden).

Mom and son doing great… Dad proud, but slightly dazed!

To see more pix of the baby and the whole Purtan family “ooohing” - and even “ahhhing”, go to DickPurtan.com

Have a great day!

It's "Oscar Time" In The D...

…Auto Show Week! Time for the unveiling of the auto companies’ cars — and women’s dresses! (At the black tie preview that is!) Unlike so many years past, it looks like we’re not gonna have much snow this week.  What’s up Canada?  Where’s all that snow you usually send our way? (There go more shovel-ready jobs!)

Lion’s season over… but, hey, they made the play-offs and we haven’t been able to say that in over a decade! Stafford-Johnson passing combo portends great things for next season! Now if we can just improve our defensive secondary…

Today at DickPurtan.com we cover “contraception” at the GOP debate and a lack of it for Beyonce and her husband Jay Z… (They just had a baby - and wait til you hear her name!) Jay Z filmed the delivery and Kayne West said “Beyonce had the greatest birth-video of all time!”

Meanwhile, on this day in 1913… Richard Nixon was born.  His dad recorded the birth and historians still can’t explain the 18 and 1/2 min. gap in the audio tape!

For more scintillating stories… I’ll see you over at DickPurtan.com!

Have a great day!

The Holiday Week That Was...

I hope your Holiday week was a good one.  I saw two movies, “War Horse” (good) and “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” (very hard to follow the plot unless you’ve read the book which I hadn’t).

New Year’s Eve I watched Lady Gaga perform in Times Square with a birdcage over her head (weird in a good way) and comic Kathy Griffin strip down to her bra and panties on CNN (weird in a bad way). At least she didn’t say F_ _ K  as she did the last two years.  The CNN execs must have nixed that, and just when it was becoming a New Year’s tradition!

How about MSU with that 33-30 triple overtime win over Georgia yesterday!!!

And tonight Michigan plays Virginia Tech at 8:30 at the New Orleans Superdome in the Sugar Bowl - Go Blue!!!

Then the Lions will play at the same venue against the Saints Saturday night.

And now for todays blog… There’s bad news for guys named “Kevin” and girls named “Mandy”! Elton John reveals who he wants to portray him in his life story, and this is the anniversary of John & Yoko’s nude album cover.  We’ve decided not to publish the picture in case you have an empty stomach! And speaking of disturbing pictures… check out the picture of Big Al on my Offical Dick Purtan Facebook Page

Have a great day, and a great year!

"Twas The Monday Before Christmas..."

…And the Monday after the Lions came roaring back with a 4th quarter game-winning drive to beat Oakland 28-27. Amazing performance by Lions’ receiver Calvin Johnson!

North Korea’s “Dear Leader” Kim Jong Il dies of heart failure.  Apparently he was more “Il” than we thought! His 24-year-old son Kim Jong Un takes over… He’s got some pretty big elevator shoes to fill!

You’ll find more on that story, plus… the word American’s hate the most! (And no it’s not “Kardashian!”) and info the Beach Boys reunion tour today at DickPurtan.com.

Your Delivery Before Christmas... My Daughter's After!

Big weekend for the Purtan Family as we hosted a baby shower and celebrated my wife’s birthday on the same day! (No… Gail’s not the one having the baby, thank God! It’s our youngest daughter Julie!)

In addition to the usual “Guess The Weight Of The Baby” (due in January) and the “Guess How Many Baby Bottle Nipples Are In The Jar” games, 40 of Julie’s friends including her mom and five sisters played a new one called “The Loaded Diaper Game”.  Forty newborn Pampers were hung on a board… each one containing an instant lottery ticket and one - the “Loaded Diaper” - contained a $25 Visa Gift Card.

I arrived near the end of the party, to carry the gifts down and have a couple pieces of cake!

Speaking of impending deliveries… my new (and final) CD, “The Best of Dick Purtan & Purtan’s People Vol. 10” can be delivered to your door - or the door of anyone on your your holiday gift list in plenty of time for the big day! It contains 40 of my favorite character bits and spontaneous “moments” from the last few years of my show before I hung up my headphones.  And at just $19.99 it make a great, inexpensive gift for anyone who was a fan of the show!

Ordering is quick and easy… and unlike Julie, you won’t need an epidural to get through it!

Have a great Monday!

Hope you had a happy Thanksgiving weekend and didn’t run into too many “Turkeys” on Black Friday! Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think anything says “A Good Old Fashioned Christmas” more than a woman pepper spraying 20 fellow shoppers in order to get a good deal on an Xbox!  (Read more about that and other fun shopping stories @ DickPurtan.com).

Great weekend for sports fans!  And of course Thursday, our Lions welcome Superbowl Champions the Green Bay Packers to Ford Field for the annual Turkey Day Game!  Speaking of athletics, being the jock that I am, I pulled my back out in a Charity Softball Game for the Salvation Army a couple months ago.  Just got “back” - so to speak - from the Dr. and things are progressing…

7 Days And Counting...

…Until the release of my brand new “Best Of” CD! This will be the 10th, and last, in the series of CD’s I’ve put out though the years!  It features 40 of my favorite bits from the last few years of my radio show, and will be available starting next Monday, November 21st, at Amazon.com!

The price is $19.99 and proceeds will help benefit two vital Michigan Military charities: Operation Homefront Michigan and Honor Flight Michigan: The Legacy Project.

I’m thrilled to be working with these two groups and my hope is that holiday sales of the CD will help them achieve their goals of both “Honoring the Past and Supporting the Present”.

Operation Homefront Michigan provides services to deployed military families and wounded warriors.  They issue emergency assistance in the forms of:  food and baby necessities; car repair; house payments; plumbing; moving assistance; appliance repair; school supplies and backpacks; holiday Adopt-a-Family; community events; and even bicycles to military children in need.

Honor Flight Michigan was created to fly Michigan’s WWII veterans with an “Honor Flight” to visit the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Nearly 1400 veterans have experienced this memorable journey. Now Honor Flight is building a legacy project of a permanent memorial, in Royal Oak, to the Michigan WWII vets to remind future generations of the importance of the service and sacrifices made by these extraordinary men and women.

For more information on the CD and a party/fundraiser I will be hosting for these two critically exemplary charitable military organizations just click on either of their links above, or click on the “Make a Reservation” link @ DickPurtan.com .

It's Halloween! And We've Got A Special Treat! (And That's No Trick!)

Happy Halloween!  Today at DickPurtan.com we talk about how a lingerie expert says that Halloween isn’t just for kids anymore… it’s also for adults who like to dress up in sexy costumes! (Which explains why I’m going as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad!) Also we’ll tell you about a 120 year old man who just married a 60 year old woman over the weekend. They’re registered at Bed, Bath & The Great Beyond…

Since today’s Halloween, we’ve officially entered the “Holiday Season”!  As you begin putting your gift-giving list together, I want to tell you about something special that’s coming out in plenty of time to make it under your tree… “The Best Of Purtan - Volume 10” CD. It’s a compilation of the “Best Of” from the show over the last several years leading up to my retirement.  Your purchase of the CD will not only provide you with some laughs, it will benefit two great Michigan-based Military charities: Honor Flight and Operation Homefront. Click on their links to see just what they do for the brave men and women who have given so much to our country in wars both past and present.

Stay tuned for details on how to purchase the CD coming your way in the days ahead!

Have a great, safe Halloween and I’ll see you over at DickPurtan.com!

P.S. If you happen to be in my neighborhood trick or treating, stop by my house!  I’m handing out my traditonal ladels full of soup!

Do You Believe In Miracles?

There were two over the weekend! First of all, despite minister Harold Campings prediction (again), the World did not come to an end on Friday… and we’re still here!  Secondly, the MSU Spartans took down the favored Wisconsin Badgers in a last second “Hail Mary” pass - ending their unbeaten streak!

Go Green! Go White! Go ahead and pay your mortgage since it appears the world will continue for a while!

Today on DickPurtan.com we talk about those stories, plus pictures show Gadhafi looked better dead than alive. And it turns out, as hard to believe as it is, he’d been wearing a hair piece for years! (Bought it from “Omar The Toupee Maker”).  Also… despite all the 3D Boob hype, tickets sales for “The Three Muskateers” sagged at movie ticket booths across the country this weekend!

Big news: Look for a brand new “Best of Purtan” CD coming soon, in time for the Holidays! Details forthcoming…

And don’t forget to check out my latest Podcast (#15) with special guest stars Wendell Ledbetter and The Story Lady!

Have a great Monday… and I’ll see you over at DickPurtan.com

Lions Lose to 49er's... Coaches Lose Their Tempers!

The Lions lost to the 49er’s yestesday breaking their winning streak.  But the real story seems to be what happened on the field after the game, when Lions’ coach Jim Schwartz extended his hand in congratulations to 49er’s coach Jim Harbaugh.  Harbaugh, shook his hand (“too hard” by his own admission), then proceeded to slap Schwartz on the back, pushing him away roughly.  Expletives followed, allegedly on both sides, although we don’t know exactly what words were exchanged.

I’ve got a few words of my own about the event which you can read right now at DickPurtan.com.

You’ll also find out who pulled a Marilyn Monroe and serenaded Bill Clinton last night at his 65th Birthday Party and how the women in a town in Colombia went on a sex strike and won! Big time!

And don’t forget to check out Podcast #14!  It’s hot off the presses… It’s FREE and worth every penny!

The Tigers, Then The Lions And Bears! Oh My!

Today the Boys of Summer and the Boys of Fall both Play Ball!  The Tigers go against the Texas Rangers this afternoon at 4:19pm on TBS, trying to tie the series at one game a piece.  And tonight at Ford Field, the 4-0 Lions play the Bears of Chicago on ABC’s Monday Night Football — the first time the Lions have been featured on the nationally televised sports spotlight in TEN YEARS!  The last time, the Lion’s were playing at the Silverdome! This town is jumpin’… almost as high as the Lions’ great receiver Calvin Johnson (#81)!

Meanwhile pictures are up at DickPurtan.com of last Saturday’s Salvation Army’s Celebrity softball game to raise awareness of next February’s 25th Anniversary Bed and Bread Club Radiothon.  I managed and pitched for the “Red Team” and in a “close” game, we edged out Mark Ridley’s “Blue Team” 20 to 11.  That reminds me, John Hefron will be appearing this Thursday the 13th thru Saturday the 15th at The Comedy Castle.  Call 248-542-9900 or go to comedycastle.com for tickets and showtimes!

And don’t forget to check out today’s stories including Paul McCartney’s wedding and some other good stuff up right now at DickPurtan.com — plus our latest Podcast!

Have a great day! And Go Tigers and Go Lions!

The Lions Are Starting To Look Like They're "Four" Real!

Four and Oh!!!!! Did you know that Matthew Stafford, the Lions QB, attended the same Texas High School that the Lion’s last great quarterback, Bobby Layne, went to? Talk about irony!

And let’s not forget our Tigers who evened the series last night with a 5-3 win over the Yankees.  The game tonight is going to have the two best pitchers in the American league facing each other: Justin Verlander & CC Sabathia.  First pitch: 8:37pm! It may be redundant, but GO TIGERS!!!

The icing on the cake:  Both U of M and MSU were winners on Saturday!

Today on DickPurtan.com, we delve into some other pressing issues like Roseanne Barr’s bizzare run for President, the new tell-all book by Martha Stewart’s daughter, plus a man with over a dozen hummingbirds in his underpants!

And don’t forget to check out our latest Podcast

Have a great Monday!

Superbowl Bound Lions?

Don’t laugh… anything’s possible! (Not probable, but possible!) But, the Lions and Tigers both being in First Place certainly has put a “spring” in our autumn step! What’s the next big surprise?  Art Van announcing they’re NOT having their “Biggest One-Day-Ever-Sale-In-Their-History”?

Today @ DickPurtan.com we talk about something rather surprising that Obama and Bush have in common. Plus, the Saudian Arabian King has proven he’s a real ladies man by announcing that women will be allowed to drive! (Four years from now.  Maybe.)  Also… the inventor of Doritos “expires” at 97.

And don’t forget to check out my latest Podcast with some true and hilarious  stories about peoples’ adventures with “The Birds & The Bees” It’s up for your listening pleasure right now.

Stay Vigilant - DickPurtan.com Newsletter

I spent, along with what I imagine most of you did,  a good deal of the weekend watching the 9/11 memorials and specials on TV.  They were all moving and impactful but I thought the one last night on CBS from 8 to 10 was the most dramatic.  It was the only video shot inside the Trade Center just after the planes had hit.  It was taken by chance by two French filmmaking brothers who happened to be following a NYC Fire Engine Company located only 7 blocks from the Twin Towers.

I know that al-Queda would have liked nothing better than to have mocked us by having another successful attack of some sort on the 10th anniversary, but undoubtably, because of our intensive defense preparations, they were unable to mount an attack.

This is a never ending battle and we must continually keep our guard up.  Always remember, that if you see something… say something!  We’re all in this together.

-Dick

P.S. Check out DickPurtan.com for todays latest stories and commentaries - including the amazing U of M victory over Notre Dame! And don’t forget to listen to our latest pocast.

Happy Monday!

Well we “weathered” the weekend a lot better than the folks on the East Coast.  Other than the storm, the big story was… Hey!  The Lions beat the New England Patriots bigtime! I know it’s only an exhibition win, but they won handily — 34-10 — and QB Matthew Stafford looked awfully sharp and his injured shoulder appears to be totally healed!

Speaking of shoulders, we’ve got another great DickPurtan.com Nike golf shirt to give away!  We’ll be selecting another random name from everyone in our e-mail club this afternoon and we’ll announce the winner on the DickPurtan.com homepage Tuesday!  Since you received and are reading this e-mail… you could be our winner! (Sorry! We only have Medium and Large available right now).

And don’t forget to listen to my latest Podcast. I’m joined by Jim Ochs - one of the guys who did a ton of the character voices on my show over the years! Plus, click just below the Podcast link to hear Soupy Sales deliver one of his classic jokes “on the air”!

So, check out our homepage today and everyday, and don’t forget to come back to DickPurtan.com tomorrow to find out if you’re the winner of the shirt!

Happy Monday!

Hope you had a great weekend and survived the storms that shut the Dream Cruise down for a while.  But by 7pm when the TV coverage began, the rain had stopped and things were rolling pretty good!  I’ll admit that after 14 years of broadcasting the Dream Cruise live on the radio and TV, I was content to watch the action from the comfort of my dry living room!

Also… my latest Podcast is now up at DickPurtan.com featuring our new sponsor, Marygrove Awnings, and a first time visit from one of my very favorite “Purtan Person’s” from the radio show! Just click on
